SEE BREAKING NEWS UPDATE Looking for a Christmas Miracle for Kakamega: can we secure a new venue for Dyslexic Learners in Kenya?

In Western Kenya, something extraordinary is unfolding — a quiet, determined movement to transform the future of children who think and learn differently.

For the past five years, Geoffrey, a passionate Davis facilitator-in-training and finalist for the I Am Humanity Award has supported neurodivergent learners in Kakamega. Through his maths tutoring centres, he has witnessed the life-changing impact of the Davis® Methods on children who once struggled with reading, focus, confidence, and self-belief.

But something has become clear:

These children need more than after-school support. They need a school where they can thrive from the very beginning.

BREAKING NEWS
04 January 2026
By 25 December, 2025, the amount for all 12 months of rent was raised. Tomorrow in Kenya, Geoffrey will be meeting with the committee to sign across the two classrooms, one teacher room and kitchen for the new kindergarten.

In consultation, now the rent amount has been reached, any additional donations will go towards the monthly mobile router fee of 4,600 KSH (about$65NZD per month) and any other operational funds to ensure a solid and sustainable future for the kindergarten. This can include, in addition to the mobile router fees, blackboards, chalk, chairs, pencils, etc.

We will provide photos and updated information as soon as we can on another blogpost.

A Rare Opportunity: A School Space at a Fair, Accessible Price

Rachel Barwell of Master Dyslexia and myself of Growing Choices in New Zealand, together with Geoffrey in Kakamega, Western Kenya, have been collaborating as Geoffrey has been looking for a way to start a Kindergarten where the children would then have the basics of literacy and numeracy provided, and importantly, inclusive of the neurodiverse learners.

A local Bishop, deeply moved by Geoffrey’s work, has offered him an opportunity that rarely comes along — three rooms to launch a school, with:

  • Two classrooms

  • One office space

  • A free kitchen

  • Total rent: Kshs 15,000 per month (5,000 each) ($160 Canadian  or $200 NZD)

  • Option to pay rent in two 6-monthly instalments per year

This is a fair and generous offer, and it opens the door to something we have dreamed of for a long time:
A Davis-based school in Kakamega, Western Kenya, where children can learn in a way that honours their gifts, supports their neurodiversity, and builds a happier future.

Why This Matters: Investing in Kenyan Children Is Investing in Humanity

Many of the children Geoffrey supports only receive help after school or during holidays. By then, frustration, confusion, or self-doubt have already begun to take root.

Imagine a place where:

✨ Children begin their day grounded, confident, and understood
✨ Davis Tools are woven into their learning from the start
✨ Creativity, perception, and mastery are valued
✨ Families feel supported, not alone
✨ Humanity’s future is nurtured — one child at a time

As Geoffrey says, “Doing something for children now will help humanity flourish in the future.”

This school embodies that vision.

Our Goal: 12 Months of Rent in Advance — A Foundation of Stability

To secure these rooms and give Geoffrey the stability he needs to build and plan, Rachel Barwell of Master Dyslexia, myself of Growing Choices with Dyslexia in New Zealand, and Geoffrey Ashiono Director of Math E-Zee tutoring Centres in Kakamega and Kakamega County, are collaborating to ask our global Davis community — Facilitators, Specialists, families, supporters — to come together and help us raise:

12 months of rent in advance

Kshs 15,000 × 12 = Kshs 180,000

This will allow Geoffrey to confidently commit to the space and set up a learning environment where children can thrive for years to come.

You can choose to sponsor:

  • One month of rent

  • Two weeks of rent

  • One week of rent

  • Or contribute any amount you feel called to give

Even small contributions create real impact.

How to Donate

All donations can be sent safely and directly via our Raisely page for The Kakamega Project, which provides receipts and tax documentation via The Whole Dyslexic Society (the WDS) of Canada.

(We will include the instructions and updated exchange-rate conversions in USD, CAD, AUD, and NZD so donors can easily see how much each amount equals in their currency.)

Meet the Space & the Children You’ll Be Supporting

These children are bright, creative, deeply perceptive — they deserve a learning environment that sees their strengths and helps them shine.

Together, We Can Create a Christmas Miracle

This is not just about renting rooms.
