Sometimes the first step towards easier learning isn't learning more. It's becoming oriented.
Quite a few parents tell me they know their child is bright. They can see their imagination. They hear the wonderful ideas they come up with. Yet when it comes to reading, writing, or even following instructions, everything suddenly feels much harder.
It doesn't seem to make sense.
I've heard this story many times. Parents often ask me,"Why is my child finding learning so difficult when I know they're capable?" It's a really important question. Over the years, I've found that one of the answers often begins with Orientation.
More Than Just Knowing Where You Are
When people first hear the word "Orientation", they sometimes think it simply means knowing your left from your right. But it's much more than that. Orientation helps us experience the world as steady. It allows us to stay with what we're looking at.
To focus.
To make sense of information.
When children are well oriented to life and learning, things feel calmer and clearer.
I've Seen Something Quite Lovely
One of my favourite parts of working with children is facilitating Orientation tools and then watching the moment something changes.
The activity hasn't changed. The words haven't changed. The room hasn't changed.
But suddenly, the child isn't struggling in the same way anymore. They begin to relax. They smile. They realise they can do something that felt impossible only moments before. Those moments never stop amazing me. Because perhaps the biggest change hasn't happened around the child. It's happened within them because they know how to 'switch on' focus with simple orientation tools when they need to or want to.

When children understand themselves, everything begins to feel different. Learning becomes less overwhelming. Confidence grows. They begin to discover that they're far more capable than they thought.
