Finding a Different Way to Learn
Dave* came to Growing Choices as an adult with significant challenges in the way he experienced and processed information. His visual perception meant that he had been experiencing the world as flat and dark, while his auditory perception had made sounds feel mostly muffled. He had even thought he was deaf. Through the programme, Dave* began to experience the world with more accurate visual and auditory perception.
Reading With Understanding for the First Time
One of the most significant changes for Dave* was reading. He became able to read and comprehend words, sentences, paragraphs, and books accurately for the first time. Claire describes a particularly moving moment when Dave*, his 75-year-old mum, and Claire all cried as Dave* read paragraphs from a pile of books and understood the words and meaning of each sentence.
For someone who has experienced difficulty with reading for much of their life, being able to read and understand what is on the page can be a profound change. It wasn't simply about getting the words right. Dave* was able to connect the words with their meaning and experience reading in a new way.
Changes Beyond Reading
Dave's progress also extended beyond reading. Through the focus tools, he developed a more accurate internal sense of time and was able to organise himself to cook and eat properly. The source also records that Dave* went on to start a new job and do it successfully, something he had previously felt unable to do confidently.
These changes show that supporting the way someone learns can have an impact beyond a single skill. For Dave*, the Davis Methods work supported changes in how he experienced information, reading, focus and personal organisation.
It's Never Too Late to Find What Works
Dave's* story is an important reminder that dyslexia support isn't only for children. Adults can also spend many years adapting to difficulties with reading, perception, focus or organisation without understanding that there may be another way to approach learning.
When the right tools and strategies are found, new possibilities can open up.
For Dave*, that included reading and understanding books for the first time and eventually returning to work.
It's never too late to find tools that work for the way your brain learns.
Could This Be Your Story?
If you are an adult who has always found reading, focus or learning difficult, you don't have to assume that it is simply something you have to live with.
At Growing Choices, we look at how each person experiences learning and explore tools and strategies that can support them.
Dyslexia support isn't only for children.
